The Sacred Amarnath Yatra
The Amarnath Yatra takes devotees into the high-altitude Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir. The pilgrimage leads to the sacred Amarnath Cave, which holds a special place among the important Shiva pilgrimage sites in India.
Amarnath Cave
Amarnath Cave is the main spiritual destination of the Yatra. Inside the cave, devotees have darshan of the naturally formed ice lingam, which is regarded as a manifestation associated with Lord Shiva.
Located at a high altitude, the cave can be visited during the annual Yatra season announced by the authorities. The journey requires suitable preparation because of the mountain terrain, altitude, and changing weather conditions.
Pahalgam Route
The Pahalgam route is the traditional route used for the Amarnath pilgrimage. The journey generally passes through Chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni before reaching the holy cave.
This route covers a longer trekking distance and allows pilgrims to experience the changing Himalayan scenery throughout the journey.
Baltal Route
The Baltal route is another popular option for reaching Amarnath Cave. It provides a comparatively shorter trekking route, although some sections are steep and physically demanding.
Travellers can select the route according to their itinerary, comfort level, available services, and Yatra arrangements.
Places to Visit During Your Amarnath Trip
Travelling from Mumbai gives you an opportunity to combine the pilgrimage with sightseeing in Jammu and Kashmir. Depending on the selected itinerary, you may visit:
- Jammu
